Why did you become a Direct Support Professional (DSP)?
I wanted to help others that could not do everything for themselves and to make a difference in their lives.
How would you describe your job? What do you do in a "typical" day?
My job is very rewarding. I enjoy going in daily as a routine is very important in this line of work. A typical day is arriving on time, greeting the individual and asking them what goals or plans they would like to complete that day.
If needed, I give medications, make breakfast, clean the home, work on goals and spend time with my individual. Once everything is accomplished, I do paperwork, and I always ask if there is anything they need or I can do.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The look on each individual's face when they have a good day or a good time! I love knowing I am able to make a difference no matter how small. I also have an excellent team to work with and for.
If someone is considering becoming a DSP, what would you tell him/her?
If you want a career rich in rewards of knowing you can help make a difference, this is the path for you. Do not sign up for this field if you just want a paycheck; you get attached, you care and you become like family to those we serve.
This path is all about daily routines and staying on task for our individuals; routines are essential. This path takes a very special and loving person. Some days are harder than others, but that is how you grow!
